Dental Israel

February 1st, 2012

Israel’s a place you must come and visit, and it’s connections to the dental world are not ignored.

Above is a very important image. It shows Johnny and Phillip in a marzipan mouth. And you can find it at the Marzipan Museum in Kfar Tabor. This is one of the 3 villages, this one Jewish the other 2 Arab, located on Mount Tabor, famous for being the location of the Transformation of Jesus Christ and also the site of the battle between Barak and the army of Jabin, commanded by Sisera during the leadership of the Israelite judge Deborah in the mid 14th century BCE. (Thanks, Wiki-P).

Dental people are usually fascinated by Israel. Jörg and Johannah Marchesani are spending a week here. Jörg is now semi-retired; he was the owner of the Willvonseder & Marchesani company in Vienna/Austria, which was, among other things, the agent for the Oral B line.

Here are the Marchesanis at Belvoir Fort, one of the 14 Crusader forts in Israel, and one of the best-preserved. The following is from Wikipedia:

“The Knights Hospitaller purchased the site from Velos, a French nobleman, in 1168. Standing 500 metres (1,600 ft) above the Jordan River Valley, the plateau commanded the route from Gilead into the Kingdom of Jerusalem and a nearby river crossing.[2] To the north was the Sea of Galilee and west were hills.”

We then visited Yardenit, where John baptised so many, and where, today, so many wish to be baptised. This picture shows some nuns feeding the ever-present and very friendly sea rats who share the limelight with the ceremonies.

And the following (I think great) image is of our Austrian couple lost in the Winter mist while walking on Mount Herzl, site of the graves of Israel’s past-leaders: Lea and Itzhak Rabin, Golda Meir, Levi Eshkol and the man himself.

So a place to see…

Dentist Match

July 28th, 2011

If my tennis club is anything to go by, then approximately 25% of doctors in Israel are dentists. I played this evening with Dr. Zeev (‘Wolf’) Meidan, one of 3 members known to be a dentist (perhaps some are hiding the fact).

Despite the heat and the high humidity, we had a good game.

That’s all you need to know about news from Israel this week. You do NOT need to know about tent city, about a housing price crisis that is threatening to bring down the government. Obama is not the only one in trouble.

A Beautiful Couple

April 26th, 2011

I was told that I could write about anything in this blog – as long as the subject was connected with ‘dental’.

Well….My wife, Aviva, and I, together with our brother-in-law, Dani (a leading artist from Haifa), went for a walk in Jaffa yesterday. We all have teeth.

After seeing some of the special sights, the new promenade and park, the special art galleries (naive art, glass etc. etc.) and the quaint alleys of the Old City, we entered a new restaurant – Azteca – and there we met this couple….

She’s Zha Zha, from Hannover. He’s King Hurricane Kwazulu – from Lesotho (S. Africa). They’re special in every way. First…well just look at them! He’s a musician (oh, what a surprise). But what is a surprise is that he does not play reggae. He plays most everything else. His speciality instrument (he plays many) is the beat box. That’s what such guys do with their lips….

King had been travelling for many years, always wanting to move on. When he came here, 2 years ago, he felt that this could be his home. Israel… Wow. He said that he knew the Israelis to be rather loud and aggressive. After being here some time he had come to the conclusion that, yes, the Israelis are loud and aggressive (as are many other peoples). But now he understood it, and it was OK.  This tiny country, what was seen a few months ago as the problem pinpoint in the Middle East, and which is now the peaceful pinpoint in the Middle East, has a big enough heart and personality to attract such a man.

Zha Zha? She’s also been travelling the World, picking fruit in Australia and teaching there. She tried to get into India, but no visa. So she contacted the friend she had met in the Canaries, and he said to come here – and she came. I have a feeling she’ll also stay.

Dani wanted a picture with them….

So tall….’Pick him up’, I requested….
